New Policy now in operation.
The revised Dog Management Policy was endorsed at the January council meeting and comes into effect today (29-March-23).
The most significant change for dog owners is in the Eaglehawk Neck area with the change to the Exercise Area (off lead) in the Pirates Bay Nature Recreation Area. This has been reduced in length (by approximately 500m) to avoid it overlapping the penguin colony. This change was instigated by the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS) to reduce the risk to the penguin colony and to be consistent with all other penguin colonies in Tasmania. Dogs may still be exercised on lead adjacent to the colony.
Thanks to everyone that made a submission on the draft policy. All submissions were considered by the relevant land manager (Council or PWS) in finalising this policy. The policy will be reviewed again in 2028.
